P.O.W. Camp in Hearne
Published Jan 24, 2008

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, it was suddenly forced to deal with German and Italian prisoners of war.

They were housed in 511 camps around the U.S., with Texas having twice as many POW camps as any other state simply because it had more space. One of the state’s camps was at Hearne in Robertson County, operating from 1942-47. Today, its remains include the camp water tower, a pond built by POWs and several of the original barracks.
