The Twelfth Man
Published Jan 24, 2008

The tradition of the Twelfth Man at Texas A&M is truly a tradition – since 1922.

It was in January of that year when an underdog Aggie football team was playing the nation’s top-ranked team, Centre College. With limited reserves on the bench, Aggie coach Dana Bible looked up into the grandstands and motioned for E. King Gill, a Texas A&M basketball player, to get into uniform in case he was needed.

Gill wasn’t needed but stood on the sidelines in uniform for the entire game, which the Aggies won, 22-14. Thus began the tradition of the Twelfth Man – ready for action in case one of the 11 players cannot continue.

Today, the entire student body at A&M is the Twelfth Man, and they stand during the entire football game to show their support.
