Area Golf Courses Present the Perfect Challenge
Published Jan 24, 2008

The course at Miramont Country Club is the newest in the region.

Breaking par is becoming a hit in The Research Valley, with several unique golf courses that range from the affordable to the upscale and offer everything from plain ole fun with miniature golf to a much more elite country club course.

World-class private golf courses such as Miramont and Traditions are turning heads for residents and visitors alike.

“Within the actual valley itself, there are tremendous golf courses here,” says Barry Biggar, president and chief executive of the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “The two newest are Miramont and Traditions; both are exceptional.”

Miramont Country Club, the most recent golf course built in the region, opened in Bryan in 2005 as an upscale private course featuring 22 holes of golf.

Traditions Golf & Country Club opened in 2004 and offers members a chance to play a 7,200-plus yard, par-72 championship golf course. The course, co-designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son, Jack Nicklaus II, covers about 250 acres with unique water features.

Other courses in the region include:

  • Pebble Creek Country Club, a 1,400-acre, 18-hole championship private course in a residential area in College Station that is open to club members.
  • Pecan Lakes Golf Club in Navasota, open seven days a week to the public with discounts for students and seniors. Pecan Lakes Golf Club offers more than 180 acres of contoured playing ground, with four sets of tees, as well as private and group instruction.
  • Rockdale Country Club, a nine-hole par-36 layout with water play on five holes in Rockdale that is open to club members.
  • Texas A&M University Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-71 course in College Station that’s open to students, staff, alumni and retirees.
  • Hilltop Lakes Golf Course, overlooking the Brazos Valley, is a private course for club members.
  • Navasota Municipal Course, a nine-hole, nearly flat course, is open to the public, with special scramble tournaments each Thursday during warmer months.
  • Oak Grove Country Club, a fairly short course in Franklin, is open to club members and guests. Oak Ridge Country Club in Madisonville is available for non-members to play either a nine-hole or 18-hole game. This course has been rated by the Dallas Morning News as the ninth best nine-hole course in Texas.
